JUDGE NICK NAZARETIAN TO HAVE A “BLAST”
HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION

(TAMPA, FLORIDA - 5/11/04) – Future litigators will enter the halls of justice on Friday, May 14th, as Blake Legal Action Student Team (BLAST) will conduct its mock trial competition and awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m., in Courtroom 21 of the Courthouse Annex, 800 E. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa.

BLAST is part of Blake High School’s Legal Studies program, allowing students to have an inside look at the court system, pairing them with public defenders and state attorneys for real-life courtroom experience. For many of the students, the experience gives them an opportunity for positive contact with the court system, and opens their eyes to career opportunities.

Presiding over the trials will be the Honorable Nick Nazaretian. Judge Nazaretian is no stranger to mock trial competitions, as this will be his fourth event with BLAST.

“I enjoy having the opportunity to interact with the students,” Nazaretian explains. “It gives me the opportunity to educate them with regard to the law. It is always a pleasure seeing young people work so hard in their presentation and then deliver it in a real courtroom setting. These competitions give me the opportunity to stress doing well in school and working hard will pay off, and that being a lawyer is a real opportunity for them.”

Judge Nazaretian was appointed to the bench in 2001 and presides over a County Criminal court division. His enthusiasm for the law and his rapport with young people makes his courtroom a favorite stop during courthouse tours. In addition to the Blake mock trial competition, Judge Nazaretian has also presided over mock trials for Stetson Law School and the Hillsborough County High School Competition.

Following the trials, an awards ceremony will take place in the courtroom at 3:30 p.m. Local government and school officials will be on hand to honor the students for a job well done.
