ELDER JUSTICE CENTER VOLUNTEERS HONORED

(TAMPA, FLORIDA - 8/25/04) – Earlier this month, the 13th Judicial Circuit Guardianship Division and the Elder Justice Center (EJC) honored volunteers for their service as court monitors in guardianship cases. Judge Susan Sexton, Circuit Court Judge, presented certificates of appreciation on behalf of the Probate, Guardianship,
Mental Health Division, as well as the Chief Judge, Manuel Menendez, Jr. Each of the 25 volunteers and nine interns also received personalized awards as an expression of the court's gratitude for his/her dedication to the program. In addition, Volunteer Recruiter, Suzanne Mizsur-Porter and Volunteer Supervisor, Mary George, also
received recognition for their diligent efforts in ensuring the program's success.

The EJC Volunteer/Internship Program was established as a one-year grant through the Retirement Research Foundation. As court monitors for guardianship cases, the volunteers conducted in-person visits and assessed the overall health and status of incapacitated adults under guardianship. The results of each monitor visit were formulated into a report and filed with the court for review. According to Marcia Larkin, EJC Program Coordinator, overall initial results indicate that certain risk factors of wards under guardianship were better assessed by implementation of the grant project and that the quality of life of the incapacitated adults were improved by the volunteers and interns conducting the monitor visits.
