DRUG COURT JUDGE ACCEPTS MOVING PROCLAMATION

TAMPA- - Acknowledging the collaborations of nine community organizations to the benefit of Hillsborough County who will share a $500,000 federal grant and an $88,000 grant match from the Hillsborough County Children’s Board, Hillsborough County Commissioners signed a proclamation, which in the spirit of collaboration will be shared by those involved in the grant. In fact, Bill Hogan, Hillsborough County Children’s Services, one of the Principal Investigators of the grant which will reunite parents and children who are affected by methamphetamine or other substance abuse by ensuring their health and permanency, will present the proclamation to Judge Jack Espinosa, Jr. in Courtroom 1, George Edgecomb Courthouse, on December 19, 2007 at 3:00 p.m.

“We’re excited to be able to fill an important need in our community,” stated Judge Espinosa, “and the court is very pleased with this collaborative effort.” The Court Administrator, Mike Bridenback is also pleased that the court is part of the collaboration as the court will receive direct benefit with a position, provided by the Children’s Home, as well as on-site drug-screens. “This is a win-win situation from the courts perspective as we can now expand the range of services in our dependency division to meet the needs of more people,” Bridenback explained.

Other agencies involved in the collaboration include:

  • Hillsborough County Children’s Services
  • The Children’s Home, Inc.
  • Drug Abuse Comprehensive Coordinating Office, Inc.
  • Department of Children and Families; Hillsborough Kids, Inc.
  • Hillsborough County Health & Social Services
  • Hillsborough County Anti-Drug Alliance Inc
  • Tampa Metropolitan YMCA
  • Hillsborough County Children’s Board

While the grant focuses on the use of methamphetamine use, other drugs are included. In addition, to public awareness, the project will provide annually:

  • 16 additional slots for inpatient treatment
  • 4 additional slots for outpatient drug treatment
  • 300 additional drug screens
  • 40 families with the support of a Systems Navigator (court position) to guide their efforts toward reunification
  • 160 hours of staff training in substance abuse screening and identification
  • 50 children in out-of-home care with prevention program
