Adult Drug Court
Recognizing the connection between criminal activity and substance abuse in our community, the Pre-trial Intervention Drug Court was established in 1992. This diversionary program was designed to deal with first-time felony drug offenders for defendants charged with 3rd degree felony offenses, such as grand theft or uttering a forged instrument. Participants in the program must be willing to waive their right to a speedy trial. Before a defendant may enter the program, he or she must be approved by the judge, the State Attorney's Office, the Department of Corrections PTI program and the Drug Abuse Comprehensive Coordinating Office (DACCO). The program has expanded from 100 participants in 1992 to a program capacity of 250 today.
Drug Division
Initiated for more serious drug offenders who request substance abuse treatment and agree to plead to the charges against them, the drug division was created in 1994. To accommodate the volume of drug offenders in our circuit, a second full-time division was dedicated in August 1998. Currently, more than 2,600 offenders are under the supervision of the two drug divisions, receiving more intensive judicial and community supervision, in addition to drug treatment and regular testing.
