Jurisdiction includes domestic relations, adoptions, domestic violence, dissolutions of marriage, child support, custody, alimony, visitation, and related matters. One party must file a petition initially, which identifies the filing party as the petitioner and the other party as the respondant. The parties may or may not be represented by legal counsel; people without an attorney are encouraged to seek assistance through the Case Management. There are no trials by jury in the Family Law Division; the judge listens to the evidence in Final Hearings and then makes a determination.
